Women seek to lift, reduce or enhance their breasts for countless reasons. While most people think of breast implants or a breast lift for cosmetic purposes, there are several medical reasons these procedures are necessary to restore a balanced bust size and femininity. Dr. Melinda Lacerna is a double board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in breast, body and face procedures. She has a personal understanding of the nuances of the female breast and body shape and can help you achieve natural-looking breasts that fit your figure.
1. Macromastia or Gigantomastia
Some women experience an overgrowth of breast tissue during puberty, leaving them with breasts that are too large for their body frame. Large breasts (macromastia or gigantomastia) take a significant toll on your quality of life, from limiting your activities and exercises to chronic, painful symptoms such as neck, back and shoulder pain, skin irritation, rashes, infection and poor posture.
A breast reduction removes the excess breast tissue to reach a breast size that looks natural and proportionate to the rest of your body. This procedure is often deemed medically necessary and may involve a breast lift.
2. Asymmetrical (Uneven) Breasts
No two breasts are identical, but some women experience significant breast size and shape differences. One could be an A cup, while the other is a B or C cup. This often occurs during puberty but could also happen from trauma or hormonal changes during pregnancy or medication use. Significant weight loss and the natural aging process may affect each breast differently. Uneven breasts could also result from a breast procedure to remove a malignant or benign lump in the breast tissue (lumpectomy).
Many women with uneven breasts struggle to find bras and clothing that fit their mismatched breast sizes and experience low self-esteem. Breast augmentation can provide a symmetrical bust with breast implants.
3. Breast Reconstruction After Mastectomy or Lumpectomy
A single or double mastectomy, which removes the entire breast(s), may be performed to help eradicate breast cancer or reduce your risk of cancer. A lumpectomy focuses on preserving healthy breast tissue and removing the abnormal growth. Both of these procedures affect the appearance of your breasts, and breast cancer survivors often feel a loss of femininity and sense of self.
Breast reconstruction rebuilds your breasts after they are wholly or partially removed to address breast cancer. Immediate and delayed breast reconstruction are available, and each has advantages and disadvantages.
