Dermal fillers have offered men and women a younger complexion for decades, but many injectables require ongoing treatments to maintain that aesthetic. Sculptra and Bellafill are dermal fillers that provide semi-permanent or permanent results, so you can enjoy smooth, supple skin for years to come.
At LA Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, our double board-certified plastic surgeon offers various injectables to help patients reduce lines and wrinkles and other signs of aging. Dr. Melinda Lacerna understands the delicate facial tissues and how to expertly inject dermal fillers for maximum results.
Semi-Permanent Results with Sculptra
Sculptra is a dermal filler made with poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). PLLA is a synthetic material that jumpstarts your body’s production of collagen and has been used for decades as a suture material. Collagen is considered the “fountain of youth” protein because it provides a supple appearance and is the framework for cellular support.
Unfortunately, you start to produce less collagen as early as your mid-20s. Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that is FDA approved for collagen replacement. The PLLA in Sculptra works with your body in the deep skin layers to strengthen and restore the inner structure and volume of the treated area.
This long-term injectable works best in the lower face, filling in laugh lines, enhancing thin lips and smoothing deep nasolabial folds. Sculptra can improve smile lines, marionette lines and chin wrinkles. Unlike other dermal fillers, Sculptra doesn’t provide instant results but gradually improves the skin’s appearance as your body responds to the injectable by creating more collagen.
Three Sculptra treatments are typically recommended, spaced over three months. Sculptra can last up to two years and is excellent for those wanting to reduce lines and wrinkles without appearing like they’ve had cosmetic treatments.
Permanent Anti-Aging Results with Bellafill
Bellafill is a permanent dermal filler that works differently from the typical hyaluronic acid injectable. It is a non-resorbable product that uses enhanced bovine collagen to restore a youthful appearance. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is the synthetic implant material used to create microspheres that stay in the skin’s tissues long term.
Dr. Lacerna injects Bellafill with an ultrafine needle, and the dermal filler contains lidocaine to ease your discomfort. Bellafill adds volume to the skin immediately, smoothing wrinkles and folds. The PMMA microspheres provide permanent wrinkle correction and structural support for your body’s natural collagen production to fill in over time.
A 12-month clinical trial of Bellafill with more than 250 patients found the injectable was safe and effective for wrinkle control for at least one year. The results are permanent as the PMMA microspheres remain in the skin’s tissues. Bellafill is FDA-approved to treat nasolabial folds (smile lines) and correct moderate to severe acne scars in the cheeks.
