What is Botox® Cosmetic?

Botox is the first and only FDA-approved drug that is used to cosmetically improve the appearance of wrinkles, especially crow’s feet and brow lines. It does so by temporarily paralyzing the muscles. Clinically, Botox also treats more than 20 different medical conditions including certain muscular conditions, migraines and leaky bladders. When it is injected in very small doses, it prevents nerve signals from reaching the muscles, prohibiting them from contracting. Before injection, the doctor dilutes Botox in saline and then administers it into the neuromuscular tissues. It usually takes about one to two weeks for the maximum effect to occur. Most patients do not experience any side effects with Botox, but some may feel some mild discomfort or numbness in the injection area.

Risks include dry mouth, headaches or eye/face drooping. Pregnant or nursing mothers are advised to not use Botox.

An injection of a clinical formula of Botulinum Toxin Type A, known as Botox® Cosmetic makes it possible to immobilize selected muscles of facial expression, smoothing deep expression lines and furrows, especially around the forehead and eye area.

Areas of Botox Injections

Forehead Lines
Botox smooths horizontal lines on the forehead, helping to restore a more youthful appearance by relaxing the muscles responsible for these wrinkles.
Targeting the area between the eyebrows, Botox reduces the vertical lines often called “11s,” providing an optimal treatment to soften expressions that make you look stressed or angry.
Botox can soften these fine lines around the eyes. This minimally invasive procedure helps prevent further skin creasing and loss of collagen in the delicate eye area.
Botox can relax the small muscles on the sides of the nose that cause wrinkles when you scrunch, contributing to a refreshed, youthful look.
Injections here can slim the jawline and reduce tension from teeth grinding, offering both aesthetic and functional benefits with minimal downtime.
Botox helps smooth vertical neck bands caused by muscle activity and collagen loss, supporting a smoother, firmer appearance.

What to Expect From Botox Injections?

Consultation

The Botox process begins with a personalized consultation, where your provider evaluates your facial concerns, medical history, and aesthetic goals. This step ensures the treatment plan is tailored to address cosmetic issues, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and bunny lines.

Before the injections, the treatment area is cleansed, and any makeup or skincare products are removed. A topical numbing agent may be applied for added comfort, though most patients find the procedure tolerable without it.
Using a fine needle, your provider carefully injects small amounts of Botox into targeted facial muscles. Common areas include the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes. The entire injection process typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
After the procedure, you will receive simple aftercare instructions, such as avoiding rubbing the treated areas or lying down for several hours. There’s little to no downtime, allowing most patients to return to their routine the same day.

Aftercare Tips

Proper aftercare is essential to help Botox settle correctly and ensure optimal results. Following simple guidelines can support a smoother recovery and minimize unwanted side effects. Here are some crucial tips:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing the treated areas

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment

  • Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours

  • Avoid alcohol for the rest of the day

  • Do not apply heat or use saunas for 24 hours

  • Wait at least 24 hours before getting facials or massages

  • Follow any personalized instructions from your provider

Can I Combine Botox With Dermal Fillers?

Yes, you can safely combine Botox with dermal fillers, and many people choose to do so for more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. While Botox targets dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement, dermal fillers add volume and smooth out deeper lines. Popular filler options include poly-L-lactic acid and hyaluronic acid, which help restore lost collagen and provide natural-looking fullness. When used together, they can enhance natural beauty and create balanced, long-lasting results with minimal downtime.
